Doc Watson Biography

(March 3, 1923 to May 29, 2012) American guitar player, songwriter and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues and gospel music. Grandfather of Richard Watson (2).

Doc Watson recorded over 50 albums, won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1997, Doc received the National Medal of Arts and in 2000 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor.

Doc was born on March 3, 1923 in Stoney Fork Township, North Carolina. On May 29, 2012, at age 89, he died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Doc had undergone colon surgery a few days earlier on May 24, 2012.
