Greg Humphreys Biography

Greg Humphreys was the lead singer and principal songwriter for the North Carolina jangle pop band Dillon Fence, which disbanded in 1995. He would go on to found Hobex, a group that displayed Humphreys' burgeoning interest in soul artists such as Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, and Stevie Wonder. Humphreys originally met future Dillon Fence bandmate Chris Goode at their Winston-Salem high school in the early '80s, and the two formed a covers band. Upon graduation, they parted ways, Humphreys going to UNC and Goode to Wake Forest U. In 1986, the two, with the addition of guitarist Kent Alphin, reunited and began rehearsing. Despite some national exposure and opening slots for the Black Crowes and Hootie and the Blowfish, the group remained largely a Southeastern U.S. phenomenon and splintered in 1995. Humphreys and Andy Ware (who had been added to the Dillon Fence lineup toward the end) formed Hobex, who became a popular regional band. In 2001, Dillon Fence reunited for a two-week tour on their home turf. They shared a bill with Hobex, with Humphreys pulling double duty. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide
