American composer, conductor and pianist (born August 25, 1918, Lawrence, Massachusetts - died October 14, 1990, New York City, New York).

Most famous for his time as music director with The New York Philharmonic Orchestra and his works such as West Side Story and On The Town.

Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.

Father of Alexander Bernstein and Nina Bernstein.
