    Monk Biography

Monk was conceived in 1996 by Ric Hordinski, and their music ranges from atmospheric and ambient to high-energy rock and roll. Monk creates sounds which have evolved from varied musical influences spanning Europe, the Americas, and the East. Ric HordinskiÆs talent as a songwriter was first exhibited with the band Over the Rhine, where he penned a third of the material. One of his songs, Circle of Quiet, went on to become the number twelve AAA radio song of the year, and Over the RhineÆs biggest radio success.

HordinskiÆs virtuosity as a guitar player is rooted in a strong technical and theoretical foundation, and has earned him high praise from some of the best players in the world, including Phil Keaggy, who says that ôRic is a painter, using the melodies of strings to communicate beautiful colors. He plays beautiful guitar.ö

Ric has also won the admiration of music critics across North America and Europe. In 1998, National Public Radio listed Ric and Monk as one of their Top 25 Essential Listening for the Echoes program. In August of 1999, Ric was one of just nine artists to be chosen for the 1999 Echoes Living Room Concert compilation cd. The other eight artists include major talents such as Maire Brennan (EnyaÆs sister from Clannad), filmaker David Lynch, and John Renbourne.
