The band was formed in 1994 with drummer Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson, who retired after the release of the second album to be replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason. The name "Sigur Rós" is Icelandic for "Victory Rose". The Icelandic band Sigur Rós was named after the band's singer's newborn sister named Sigurrós Elín. In January 2010, the band announced that they will be on hiatus until further notice in order to pursue solo careers and to spend time with their families. Kjartan Sveinsson left the band in 2013.
