Wildfire destroyed 480 modular homes in the pre-dawn darkness as 70-mile-per-hour winds blew into the community. The 11,207-acre Sayre Fire, previously called the Sylmar Fire, has burned 630 structures and is 70 percent contained. The Santa Ana winds that stoked a series of destructive wildfires across Southern California have dissipated, allowing firefighters to gain the upper hand. The firestorms prompted President Bush to issue a major disaster declaration today for Southern California making federal funding available for residents who lost homes or suffered other losses in the fires, which have destroyed about 1,000 homes.
