It is with a heavy heart that I report that Shannon Tavarez, the 11-year-old Broadway singer whose fight against cancer caught the attention of singers Alicia Keys and Rihanna, has died after losing her lengthy battle against leukemia. Tavarez, who hailed from Queens, New York, made her Broadway debut just over a year ago, in September 2009, as Young Nala in The Lion King. She performed four out of eight shows every week until April, when she received her diagnosis.
Doctors had been unable to find a suitable bone-marrow match for a transplant. Young Tavarez had received an umbilical-cord transplant in late August as an alternative, but it didn't work. Keys and RiRi took particular interest in Tavarez's case, as both began their vocal careers at a young age, as well. The powerhouse vocalists both campaigned to help find a bone-marrow transplant for Tavarez.
May she rest in peace.
