"Cut the top off, call it Amber Rose," proclaims 2 Chainz at the start of "Yuck", the first cut on Based on a T.R.U. Story.
It's a hilarious visual to kick off with, and it's emblematic of the MC's razor sharp sense of humor throughout the rest of Based on a T.R.U. Story. He shouts out Benihana and even manages to play hot potato lyrically all within the space of less than five minutes. Lil Wayne's inimitable swagger makes for an ironclad collaboration that's both hyper-catchy and hyper-funny. "Crack" sees 2 Chainz flaunting his own vernacular not giving a "fi'nuck" with not one, but two guns in his Adidas. With its creepy old timey vocals, "Dope Peddler" brings everything down to the streets with a darkness few rappers these days can muster.
However, things get light again on the smoking hot singles "No Lie" with Drake and the ultimate gentlamen's club anthem, "Birthday Song" alongside Kanye West. He doesn't stray too far from rapping about the merits of the pole on the uproarious and unique "I Luv Dem Strippers", where Nicki Minaj stomps out with one of her most fiery cameos yet.
2 Chainz also allows for some moments of intimacy on his own declaration of independence "I'm Different" and words of gratitude during "Extremely Blessed", bolstered by a hook from The-Dream. Everything culminates with one last bang on "Wut We Doin?" including a red hot cameo from CAP1.
Based on a T.R.U. Story formally announces the arrival of one of the most clever rappers in the game. He's funny, but he's also real. This is T.R.U.ely the best hip hop debut of 2012 and one of the year's best albums. You'll laugh, you'll think, and you'll know why 2 Chainz is on top.
