For April, A$AP Rocky lands our Song of the Month with “M’$.” Now, the world is anxiously awaiting his second major label full-length At.Long.Last.A$AP [RCA], and this points to the new offering trumping 2013’s flawless Long.Live.A$AP. It’s not easy to top a modern classic. His debut boasted smashes like “F*****’ Problems” and “Wild for the Night,” and it debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. He slayed the stage on festivals everywhere and touring with Rihanna even. However, “M’$” evinces that cool charisma and confidence that defined from day one as Harlem’s hip-hop savior tempers airy New York grime with impenetrable cadence and deft wordplay. “Better blast that,” Rocky urges, while going hard over the strutting synths and rapturous soundscapes. He stretches “I’m about decimals” until he turns woozy to catchy on the harmonious bridge, evincing another strong suit his voice. Rocky could always carry a tune too as well as spit, which continually separates him from the pack.
Hip-hop is crazy right now. J. Cole cooked up his masterpiece with Forest Hills Drive, Drake’s If You're Reading This It's Too Late stood out as his best yet, while Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly is speaking for a generation. These are his contemporaries and the musical climate that he’s about to release an album into. Still, the fun of the genre remains its competitiveness. Listening to this, it feels like Rocky knows that, and he’s about to come harder than ever. He’s also possessed this idiosyncratic and inimitable ability to take dark, dinge-y production and make it catchy with pure mic fireworks. “M’$” continues that tradition and amplifies it. If New York has a king right now, and it’s Rocky. That’s not going to change anytime soon. In fact, we’re all just going to have to bow at the throne once At.Long.Last.A$AP hits—whenever it does.
That’s also the fun of hip-hop at the moment. Superstars are dropping records seemingly out of the sky, changing the whole model. You know this is coming though, and “M’$” makes it all the more exciting. With the impending album and his role in the film Dope, think of 2015 as the year of A$AP Rocky, because you’re not going to have a choice otherwise.
Enjoy our Song of the Month!
