ABBA's Benny Andersson has opened up about his battle with alcoholism, admitting that once he hit a low point and realized he would "lose everything," he chose to give up the bottle.
Andersson went clean in 2001 and recently told Sweden's SVT that "When it's about the difficult battle against addiction, it doesn't matter who you are. I wasn't feeling well without alcohol, so I knew that I was in trouble. I sought help and I got it."
He continued, "I knew that if I continued drinking there was a risk I would lose everything. If you drink enough for a long enough time, you will lose things." That's very true, Benny.
Andersson appeared on SVT with his son Ludvig, who also battled substance abuse issues, as well. That tendency often runs in the family, so it's not shocking. It's nice to see that they are speaking out together.
Ludvig also said, "When you have genes and you are putting as much effort into it as I was, it's possible to drink and get addicted pretty quickly. In addition, if you take a lot of other drugs, as I was doing, the process goes even faster."
Andersson being so public and candid about his battles can certainly help others going through the same thing!
