Ace Hood "Trials & Tribulations" Album Review – 5 out of 5 stars

"My life is a story," proclaims Ace Hood on the incendiary title track of his brand new album Trials & Tribulations.
Even though the Florida titan has an unstoppable flow, his storytelling blazes the brightest. That's what elevates Trials & Tribulations to classic status. Right there on the titular anthem, he's not afraid to confront past fears and the horrendous tragedy he suffered losing his daughter—"Looked my daughter in her eyes just before she passed away". Throughout the song, he's downright hungry, devouring the beat with vicious wordplay. "Another Statistic" is hood poetry on par with the best of Illmatic or Wu-Tang Forever as he raps, "God bless Trayvon Martin I'm in my hoodie" and "Don't want to be another statistic".
For as heavy as he can get, tracks like "Before the Rollie" featuring Meek Mill and the unshakable single "We Outchea" featuring Lil Wayne are pure, potent, and powerful bangers. That's another impressive aspect of Trials & Tribulations. It's got just the right bounce for the club, but it's undeniably smart at the same time.
The perfect example of Ace's pensiveness comes mid-album on the standout "Pray For Me". It's ominous soundscape dissipates to just allow him to plead, "Somebody pray for me". Yet, there's also "Bugatti" and its event of a remix, which remains the catchiest rap song of 2013.
Everything builds to a cinematic climax on the raging "Fuck Da World" and another cry-out "Have Mercy".
This story is one you've got to experience. It's one of the year's most triumphant albums and a milestone for Ace.
Hail the new king of Florida. Hail Ace Hood.
