Late actress/screenwriter Adrienne Shelly, who wrote, directed and starred in the sleeper hit indie dramedy Waitress for Fox Searchlight in 2007, will have her final screenplay resuscitated by her husband, Andy Ostroy. Ostroy will develop and produce the project, The Morgan Story, via his A Films shingle, which he created in order to maintain and further his wife's legacy.
The screenplay centers on three sisters and follows the trio throughout the course of several decades. Ostroy has said he believes it to be his wife's best work. Waitress was a critical hit and earned $22 million. It was also considered a breakout role for star Keri Russell.
Another Shelly script, Serious Moonlight, is also being produced. It's a dark comedy about a woman who duct tapes her husband to the bathroom just as burgular shows up on their doorstep. Cheryl Hines, who starred with Shelly in Waitress, is making her directorial debut with this film. Timothy Hutton and Meg Ryan star in the indie flick.
Shelly was murdered in November 2006 in her West Village office after an exchange with a repair man, who was recently sentenced to a lengthy prison term after pleading guilty. Shelly passed away before Waitress was released and was unable to see it become a success. She is survived by Ostroy and her daughter Sophie.
