Colorado-based youth lifestyle brand Airwalk® is proud to announce the return of skateboarding legend Mike Vallely (Mike V.) to the brand's team roster. Dubbed an "iconoclast among icons" by Transworld Skateboarding, Mike V. originally rode for Airwalk in 1988 and returns to the family more than 20 years later. See, you can go home again!
"We couldn't be more excited to have Mike V. back on the roster," said Bruce Pettet, President and CEO of Collective Licensing International (CLI), which owns and manages the Airwalk brand. "Not only is Mike a true pioneer and an icon in the skate world, but his talent is undeniable. We look forward to collaborating with him throughout our silver anniversary year."
Under the new partnership, Mike V. will endorse Airwalk footwear and help design limited- edition products for the brand's 25th anniversary footwear collection. Killer!
"Airwalk was one of the original players on the skate scene, helping to mold the industry in to what it is today," Vallely said. "Partnering with the brand not only makes sense, but it also brings back a flood of timeless memories for me. I look forward to adding my personal touch to some classic Airwalk shoes."
As part of Airwalk's 25th anniversary collection, Mike V. will help design limited-edition collaboration releases of the Enigma, Reflex and JIM shoe. Each of Vallely's sneaker designs will incorporate a different graphic that represents an important landmark in Vallely's life. First up for release is the Enigma collaboration. The shoe features a fence graphic from the Brooklyn Banks, a legendary skate spot located under New York's Brooklyn Bridge where Vallely skated as a teenager. The original Enigma is available now here. Vallely's Enigma will be released on April 15th.
An Edison, NJ native, Vallely earned his first sponsorship at age 16 with George Powell and Stacey Peralta's company, Powell Peralta, and the next year he turned pro. Later, Vallely helped launch World Industries where he created a new board model that eventually became the industry standard. As a professional skateboarder, Vallely has traveled the world over and has become an icon within the skate community, appearing in countless tours, video games and skateboard videos. After stints with several skate companies through the years, Vallely decided to return to his roots and re-signed with Powell Peralta late last year. He will be featured in the upcoming Powell Peralta documentary about the story of skateboarding in the mid-late '80s. Last year, Vallely launched the inaugural Glory Bound Skatepark Tour that made 24 stops nationwide during the summer. The traveling expedition featured a mix of skate competition, entertainment and fan participation. The successful tour returns in 2011 with details to be announced soon.
Vallely is also a musician, actor, stuntman and hockey player. After stints with Mike V & The Rats and releasing several solo albums, Vallely formed Revolution Mother in 2005. The hard rock band with Vallely as front man has released two albums and has gone on tour, performing at both concert venues and skate parks.
