Al Pacino will star as the title despot in the latest film adaptation of Shakespeare's famed King Lear. Michael Radford, who lensed 2004's The Merchant of Venice, which also starred Pacino, will direct. Radford also wrote the film's script.
This is Pacino's first stab at playing King Lear. He was offered the part of Lear previously, but did not feel it was the right time to wear the character's crown until now. The play follows an aging king who needs to find a successor after splitting his kingdom into three parts, each of which is ruled by one of his daughters. The film will be shot later in the year and entirely on location in Europe.
Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles played Lear in previous film incarnations.
