On his long-awaited full-length debut People Keep Talking, Hoodie Allen takes hip-hop to a new place altogether.
The New York MC lands at a delicate crossroads between rap, pop, soul, and alternative, managing to stridently balance between all four with shining panache. Nobody's been able to seamlessly merge all of these genre elements like Hoodie does, and that's what makes People Keep Talking so refreshing and real.
The perfect example of this alchemy comes during "All About It" where his tightly crafted bars give way to one of Ed Sheeran's biggest hooks yet. At the same time, he can churn out a dance floor burner like "Show Me What You're Made Of" with the same kind of intensity he rhymes through "The Real Thing" with. He name checks countless cinematic classics on "Movie", while espousing the fun of "making all of these bangers for girls who look like Topanga" on "Sirens" featuring Alex Wiley. However, this isn't just for the ladies. His fierce energy courses through the stand out closer "Against Me" featuring Max as he proclaims, "I've got the hunger. I'm overthrowing the capital" in between a soulful and shimmering refrain by the crooner.
Simply put, Hoodie gets it. He knows what makes impressive rap, but he also can carry a pop melody with the best of them. As a result, he's built one of the most enigmatic, engaging, and enlightened debuts of 2014. People Keep Talking announces the arrival of the 21st century's sharpest young MC.
