It’s about time pop music got a new great rock group.
Magic! have all the makings of the next timeless 21st century rock band. Their debut album Don't Kill the Magic marries divine melodies, neo-reggae bounce, arena-size guitars, and some of the most infectious hooks of the year. Maroon 5 should watch out, because MAGIC!'s on their way to taking the crown.
Fronted by Nasri Atweh, the quartet certainly and (subtely) pays homage to The Police and The Beatles, while simultaneously building a sound of their own. Breakthrough single "Rude" already cast its spell on millions of listeners, but it's only one piece of this puzzle.
"Don't Kill The Magic" traipses between soulful eighties melodicism and a bombastic modern swoon. "No Evil" comes straight from the islands punctuated by a handclap meter, while "One Woman One Man" mounts from a subtle acoustic hum into some of the record's most potent and poetic lyrical passages, "I know that she cries by the red in her eyes. She's been waiting for signs that never come. All she ever really wanted was one woman one man".
Don't Kill The Magic's standout remains "Paradise". It shirks all convention and volleys between energetic rock 'n' roll, Rastafarian spunk, and transcendent pop. You won't want to leave Nasri and co.'s "Paradise". We promise that. The conclusion "How Do You Want To Be Remembered" is epic in its pondering, making for a moving final note.
MAGIC! have the power to change the game. These sonic wizards have made one of the year's best records...
