Matt and Kim make pop music fun again on New Glow—their new album for Harvest Records out now. That’s why we’ve dubbed it ARTISTdirect.com’s “Album of the Week.” New Glow eschews any kind of posturing in favor of some of the most potent, powerful, and passionate pop anthems you’ll hear all year. There’s nothing wrong with just cutting loose and dancing, and that’s what New Glow encourages. You’re going to move as soon as you hear the breathy intro to “Hey Now,” which quickly explodes into a handclap and horn swing punctuated by Matt Johnson’s vocals, “If you died, I’d die right by your side.” It’s a declaration of love that you’re going to love. Their fifth record marks a deep and delicate embrace of what always separated the duo, and that’s their ability to put music in motion. You won’t be able to help but move to the chopped bounce of “Stirred Up,” while “Hoodie On” remains an anti-fashionista anthem that’s surprisingly fashionable.

When you can move and groove to an album like this, you can live with it for a long time. The music incorporates everything from video game-esque bleeps and bloops to shimmering and sunny syhths. It makes for a vibrant sonic backdrop that allows Matt and Kim to really go H.A.M. with the good time bounce.

However, the thesis really comes through during “Make a Mess,” in which Matt admits he’s, “So bored of caring what is cool” and encourages everyone to “Make a mess because we’ve been clean for way to long” and “get undressed and dance naked to this song.” Preach brother!

Think about those words for a minute. Albums don’t have to be serious diatribes railing against cultural, political, or economic trials and tribulations. All the way back to the beginning, music was about making people feel good. That’s what New Glow does. It feels so fresh, fun, and fiery because it doesn’t simply adhere to the zeitgeist’s need to dissect the horrors of living. Rather, Matt and Kim celebrate life and invite everybody to join them for the party.
