Album of the Week: Rick Ross – “Hood Billionaire”

As definitely dope as this year’s Mastermind remains, Rick Ross already tops it with Hood Billionaire. As far as rap music goes, few maintain the consistent level of quality that Ricky Rozay prides himself on—not to mention the prolific output, especially this year. Hood Billionaire picks up where Mastermind left off, but Miami’s finest once again ups the ante. “Coke Like the 80s” could very well be one of his most provocatively catchy anthems, grabbing attention while it beckons booty shaking. On the stand out “Trap Luv”, he and Yo Gotti go bar-for-bar with the kind of booming delivery and impenetrable fortitude that timeless bangers require.
However, beyond a phenomenal Jay-Z cameo on “Movin Bass”, “Nickel Rock” with Boosie Badazz remains the album’s shining moment. Boosie sounds downright fiery as he and Ross ignite an intoxicating volley. You can’t deny the prowess here, and it’s one of the year’s best expositions of raw lyrical fire.
Things also get soulful on the K. Michelle featuring “If They Knew”, but everything closes out with a bang of course during “Brimstone” with Big K.R.I.T.
You’re going to be bumping Hood Billionaire for years to come. It’s another definitive moment for Rozay.
