Singer and songwriter steps into the spotlight with stunning full-length.
Stacy Barthe garners Album of the Week for BEcoming [Motown]. The New York singer and songwriter fearlessly conveys a story that's chilling at times but ultimately uplifting throughout the record's 17 tracks. Behind-the-scenes, she's penned songs for the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and many more among pop's A-list. However, in between cranking out hits like "Cheers (Drink to That)", she's managed to build a truly poignant and powerful R&B collection that's nothing short of triumphant. Not to mention, it's got pop hooks in all the right moments.
"My Suicide Note (Intro)" starts this tale at the bottom, quite literally. Stacy doesn't hold anything back. She faces everything from depression to addiction head-on without mincing words, yet while still weaving together always harmonious sometimes even heavenly sonic pastiches. "In My Head" is undeniably poetic, while "Sleep to Dream" and "Eyes Wide Shut" feel awake within her robust delivery. "Here I Am" stands as a declaration of place and purpose. The music itself blends potent R&B with a subtle melodic swing so the songs always remain catchy.
Barthe shines on the collaborations. Working with Common on "Live For Today," she's right at home along A-list talent as once again illustrated during her duet on of Anita Baker's "Angel" with John Legend—who also executive produced the set. She belongs up at the top with those artists she's penned tunes for. Ultimately, this is a brave, bold, and brilliant declaration from Barthe.
