"I only miss you when I can’t sleep, is that way too honest?" asks Real Friends singer Dan Lambton on "Cover You Up", one of many standouts from the Illinois band’s phenomenal Fearless Records debut, Maybe This Place Is The Same And We’re Just Changing.
Lambton’s lyrics remain both honest, heartbreaking, and hard-hitting throughout the album’s 12 tracks. It echoes Thursday and Bayside at points, but there’s a surly spark to Real Friends that separates them from the genre’s forbearers. In fact, they take that turn-of-the-century Warped Tour-style we’re all oh so familiar with and translate it into something timeless. "Summer" shines with its unnervingly blissful refrain and immense guitar. It gets heavy at just the right points, but it never bludgeons, and that’s the real magic of Real Friends. Elsewhere, "I Think I’m Moving Forward" delivers a breakup message that’s impossible not to feel and the final word on "...And We’re Just Changing" feels poignant and poetic all at once, unleashing an avalanche of emotions.
Real Friends churn out one of the best debuts of 2014, and it’s going to last quite long beyond that.
