Every once in a while and album comes along and really flips the script for the entire scene. That's precisely going to be the outcome when Slaves unveil Through Art We Are All Equals this week [out now].
You might know Jonny Craig from Emarosa and Dance Gavin Dance, but he'll become your best friend here. He opens up like never before and his voice spans an immense range even in the span of one track like the airy opener "The Fire Down Below" where his swooning scream rises in tandem with an orchestral synth before crashing into a distorted din. Meanwhile, "This Is You Throwing In The Towel" begins with a delicate guitar intro as Craig's voice matches that movement before delivering the dark proclamation, "So put the crown around head, so put the noose around neck". It's a chilling moment, yet it's juxtaposed with starkly beautiful music.
At the same time, "The Upgrade PT II" bristles with raw anger siphoned through a polyrhythmic stomp that’s simply pummeling, especially when buttressed up against Craig’s melodies. On "Starving for FRIENDS" Craig trades vocals with Pierce the Veil’s Vic Fuentes during a somber yet poetic closing moment.
Through Art We Are All Equals solidifies Craig as a legend in his own right and will make a BIG change...
