On their self-titled third full-length, Evanescence breathe life into rock 'n' roll once more.
As a whole, the album is an explosive, entrancing, and ethereal masterpiece. Kicking everything off is the first single, "What You Want". The song rises from an arena-ready drum beat into a hyper-charged verse just before Amy Lee's vocals take hold and transfix with one of the best hooks of Evanescence's career to date. You're going to be singing along to this one after only one listen and for a long time after that.
That's the real brilliance of Evanescence too. Lee can paint elegantly dark pictures that are as unique as they are uplifting and she can infuse them into the heart of a mega catchy rock tune. Few modern artists bridge that gap between universally harmonious and hypnotically heavy. She's also got a poetic lyrical style that's just as powerful and you can hear it in the words she signs on "What You Want".
Before the band took the stage for an incredible Los Angeles show on release day, Evanescence singer Amy Lee spoke to ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino about the story behind "What You Want", what the song means to her, and so much more in this exclusive video interview.
