Amy Winehouse Found Dead at 27

Troubled yet talented British soul singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home on Saturday. Winehouse was 27, joining the "27 Club," which includes fellow, lost-too-soon artists like Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. We're starting to think that's not an eerie coincidence.
Winehouse, whose struggles with drugs and other substances were well-documented throughout the course of her career, especially after her breakthrough Back to Black, won five Grammys. She failed to follow up that album, despite her initial success.
The cause of death was not immediately known. However, several sources report that the singer bought a cocktail of drugs that included Special K and ecstasy on Friday night.
Whatever the case, this is beyond tragic as Winehouse's jukebox soul was refreshing and stunning at once.
A source told The Daily Mail that "Amy seemed determined to have a big one on Friday night. She was out in Camden on Friday evening, but seemed determined to carry on the party back at her flat. None of us know who was with her into the early hours of Saturday. But getting out of it was clearly her main priority of the night."
The police investigation revealed that three people were seen outside her home: Reg Traviss, Winehouse's on-and-off boyfriend of late who is said to have broken up with her in May because she couldn't get her drug issues under control; her bodyguard Neville; and longtime friend Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace.
Her family issued this statement: "We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time." Winehouse's mother Janis spent the day with her daughter on Friday and told the press that it was "only a matter of time" before Winehouse's demons caught up with her. Janis Winehouse continued, "She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me." Winehouse's father Mitch, who was traveling to New York to perform, immediately returned home to be with his family. "This isn't real. I'm completely devastated. I'm coming home. I have to be with Amy. I can't crack up for her sake.'
Her label issued a statement to Billboard, stating: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
