Drugs were not the cause of Amy Winehouse's death, as many had presumed. The Associated Press reports that Winehouse had no illegal drugs in her system when she died, and it is still unclear exactly what killed the troubled singer. There was alcohol found in her system but how that contributed to her death, if at all, has not been determined.
It was not a shock for the media, fans and the music industry in which the singer trafficked to assume that the singer, 27, overdosed a month ago, since her battles with drugs and alcohol were quite public. An investigation is being launched into her death; it will begin in October.
The 27-year-old neo-soul diva, who had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, was found dead in her London home on July 23, and an initial post-mortem failed to determine the cause of death.
A statement released by spokesman Chris Goodman on the family's behalf read as follows: "Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death."
The mystery now deepens.
