Ang Lee, who won an Oscar in 2006 for directing Brokeback Mountain, is in negotiations to helm Life of Pi for Fox 2000. The film is an adaptation of Yann Martel's coming-of-age survival story.

The book features a youth who is the sole survivor after a freighter sinks. He ends up sharing a lifeboat with an assortment of animals, including a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan, and a starving Bengal tiger. The novel won the Man Booker Prize and quickly achieved popularity in the literary world.

The project has gone through several script revisions since being acquired by Fox 2000. At one point, director M. Night Shyamalan took a crack at rewriting the story. Lee will supervise the latest script update and a writer is expected to be hired shortly.
