If you live outside Great Britain, you probably haven't heard of the Arctic Monkeys -- yet. But this unassuming quartet from Sheffield just edged out the now-forgotten boy band Hear'Say to notch the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history.
On the strength of two #1 singles, a clever Internet marketing campaign, and unbelievable amounts of industry buzz, the band's album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not sold about 360,000 copies in its first week. To put that in perspective, the previous week's U.S. chart-topper, Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable, only sold 97,000 copies, and the U.S. market is roughly five times the size of Britain's.
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is scheduled for U.S. release on Feb. 21st on Domino Records.
