There is little left unsaid about Aretha Franklin. She has spent her career redefining gospel and soul music, and has brought faith to the faithless, but her time on stage is coming to an end in 2017. The Queen of Soul told WDIV Local 4 in Detroit, "I am retiring this year. I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it."
Franklin does not feel as if she has much left to prove on stage, but that doesn’t mean she is going anywhere. "I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from and where it is now," she said. "I'll be pretty much satisfied, but I'm not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn't be good either."
Franklin last released Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics in 2014, which featured covers of Adele, Gloria Gaynor and Chaka Khan. This year she will be returning to the studio to record something new, describing the record as "kind of multi-(directional)." "We're not pigeonholed to any one thing.” She will be working with longtime friend Stevie Wonder on the record as well. "Of course, several of the songs are going to be produced by Stevie (Wonder). There's only one Stevie, right?" It will be Franklin’s first album of new material in six years.
Though it sad that Lady Soul will no longer grace the stage with her presence, she leaves an amazing live legacy that will not be forgotten by anyone who saw her live shows.
