If you thought Eddie Argos—frontman of irreverent Brit rockers Art Brut—was just a one-trick pony, you're probably not alone. Maybe it's the exaggerated British accent within in his monosyllabic talk-singing, or his repetitive lyrics, or the subject of those lyrics (where he waxes on everything from seeing his girlfriend naked to his singing voice—yes, that is his singing voice).
But you might be surprised to learn that Argos is actually something of a renaissance man: a painter who's created images and covers for the band's singles and albums; a writer with numerous titles to his name including a forthcoming, crowdfunded memoir, titled (what else) I Formed a Band; and a comic book scribe, to boot. His Double D graphic novel, with images by Steven Horry, is set for release on November 11.
I Formed a Band features a forward by the Pixies' Black Francis, illustrations by Katie Pope (of the band Just Joans), and a cover depicting a brawny-looking Argos wielding a vacuum cleaner like a guitar. Double D relays the story of an overweight teen who soon learns he has superpowers. The novel will be accompanied by a soundtrack album with Argos, Horry, and musicians Mark Heffernan and Grant Purser, to be released by Post/Pop at the end of the year.
Serious pursuits for someone who had been called his generation's "greatest poet of the mundane." As with Art Brut, expect some light hearted, punk-flavored romps with these two titles.
