Atlanta hip-hop superstar on Good Charlotte collaboration "Game On," his history with video games, Dragon Ball Z, what to expect from Flockaveli 2 and more.
Waka Flocka Flame is enjoying a banner year. He just unleashed his contribution to the Official Soundtrack for Pixels, "Game On" [feat. Good Charlotte]. It brings rap and rock together like never before with all of his wily Atlanta charisma turned up to eleven. Following up smashes like "Hard In Da Paint" and "Round of Applause" [feat. Drake] to name a few, he's got another massive anthem in his arsenal. Plus, he's gearing up to drop the sequel to 2010's now classic Flockaveli—Flockaveli 2 [Brick Squad Monopoly, 1017 Records, Atlantic, Warner Bros.]—later this year. Like any sequel worth its salt, it builds on the original and delivers even bigger and better action. Get ready because he's about to take over. We spoke to Waka Flocka Flame in this exclusive interview about collaborating with Good Charlotte for "Game On," his love for video games and Dragon Ball Z, what's in store on Flockaveli 2, and so much more.
How are you?
I'm chilling, Rick. What's up bro? I'm in New York right now, but I'm getting ready to hop on a flight and go back to Georgia. My f***ing A/C blew out. One of my units in my house is down because it was so damn hot.
That's no fun.
I have to go talk to my house man and be a father [Laughs].
"Game On" with Good Charlotte preserves the classic Waka sound, but you go into new territory.
Yes, let's talk about this new territory.
What's the story behind the song?
For me, being an Adam Sandler fan, a video game fan, and a fan of the culture of rockstarism, if that's even a word, it was awesome. I'm a f***ing game geek, bro. Just for me to be a part of a movie that's for video games, that s*** was an accomplishment, plus it was challenging because I didn't even think I could rap on that beat. I killed that s***, so I pat myself on the back for that [Laughs].
Did the beat inspire something different out of you?
It definitely did. Now, it makes me want to attack certain beats like that on that level because there ain't no telling what I'm going to say on them.
You matched up with Good Charlotte really well.
It was done over the internet. I'm going to L.A. on Monday, and I'm going to lock in with them. They're cool people. I could see myself drinking and getting f***ed up with them. They're just cool. I met them in person, and they're cool as s***. On some one-on-one time, we're finally about to do that.
What did you think of Pixels?
I couldn't catch anything but the beginning of it. I had two shows the same day as the premiere of the 3D movie. I was mad as s***. I tried to miss my shows. That was mad funny. They told me if I missed my shows, they would take me to court. I wanted to see the movie! Man, I saw only the beginning, and that s*** was good. The 3D was incredible. We got only three more days to see it now. ['Pixels - The Movie' is in theaters July 24 - Ed.]
