Mike Vallely is a hip Renaissance man. He is a lifelong skateboarder and has fronted bands. He recently returned to endorsing Airwalks - a brand of kicks I still wear- and he recently engaged in a "Take Aim" session with ARTISTdirect News Editor Amy Sciarretto about skating vs. music and more!
1. What's your favorite part of representing the Airwalk brand?
I really am a huge fan of the classic Airwalk designs. To me they are the embodiment of what a skate shoe truly is. So, to be representing Airwalk and to be involved in revisiting and representing some of these classic designs and working towards new classics, is just a great feeling for me as a pro skater.
2. Biggest similarity between skating and being in a band?
Well, for me both pursuits are expressive in nature. I feel skateboarding is less competitive and more of a creative, expressive pursuit. In my eyes, skateboarding is more like music than football.
3. Biggest difference?
Music is or can be collaborative in many ways, in the sense of being in a band, where as skating is always completely individual at all levels.
4. How do you approach designing attire or shoes? Is there a philosophy you engage?
My philosophy is simple... Do I like it? That's my only real barometer when it comes to anything I'm involved with. The last thing I want is for someone else to tell me what's cool, what's happening, what's trendy and why I'm supposed to like it. I can figure that out for myself. The good stuff comes from a real place of inspiration. I don't follow.
5. What's on the docket for the rest of 2011 for you?
As busy as ever. Skating, music, writing, traveling, appearances and I'm completely focused on reenergizing a skate scene that has lost its identity. The scene has become too competitive where it places emphasis and what its motivation is. We need to get back to fun.
