The holidays are often a time for reflection. The passing of time as represented on a cyclical calendar, consisting of arbitrary dates that humanity associates with various meanings, conjures all kinds of celebrations, memories, expectations, and excuses to celebrate, commemorate, or get drunk.

This Holiday, when compiling the ARTISTdirect Christmas Playlist, we turned our minds to our own place in time. ARTISTdirect has now been in the game for 22 years. 22 Years in an industry that has seen change, evolution, revolution and revelation. Through all this time there has been one consistent thing that remains in our focus — music, and the artists behind the music. It was natural that we started to think of the souls that soundtracked each of our previous celebrations, and so compiled a chronological playlist sharing each of the Christmas Number One Songs from Billboard, every year since we first launched in 1994.

So without further ado — here is the ARTISTdirect 2016 Christmas Playlist, an exploration of memorable songs from artists who have defined over two decades of Christmas on the radio.
