Avril Lavigne relocated to Paris in order to master the French language. She couldn't hire a tutor for that? Ah, we guess wanted to learn it in an authentic fashion.
The singer is actually French Canadian, and promised her father she would learn the language and the only way she could do that was by living in France and being forced to speak it daily. "I have my French passport and my dad is from France, but I'm also a French Canadian, so I really wanted to learn French; it was important," Av said.
She continued, "Last year I was single for the first time and I sold my house in L.A. and I'd just finished my world tour and I was like, 'I think I'm going to go to France…' I went all by myself, I didn't know anyone and I got an apartment… and I did school with Berlitz, five days a week, six hours a day."
Come to think of it, that's pretty impressive. She just dove right in and immersed herself in local culture and language.
The singer is happy with her choice, as it enriched her culturally and beyond. "I walked around the streets by myself and I was in school," she recalled. "It was so weird because I'm super-ADD and I can't sit still and it was hard and I was jet-lagged too for, like, a month. But it was really cool. I loved it."
She continues to learn the language and master it.
Her new single "Here's to Never Growing Up" is out now.
What language would you like to learn, even if you have to move to another country to do it?
