B. Smyth shines on of the hottest songs of 2013, his single "Leggo" featuring 2 Chainz.
Fusing R&B style, pop infectiousness, and hip hop swag, "Leggo" will have you singing and shaking along to it as soon as you hear it bumping. It's not only an instantly unforgettable single, but it's the perfect introduction to B. Smyth.
In this exclusive interview, ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino spoke to B. Smyth about "Leggo", his influences, and so much more.
What's the story behind "Leggo"?
The term "Leggo" is a new slang word. It means "Let go". In the studio, we heard the beat, and a couple of writers were in there. We came up with the song, and we felt like it was really energetic. We knew the visuals would be dope because it's a high-energy song, and it's up-tempo. That's how it came about. Once we finished it, Motown came to me and asked me who my favorite rappers in the game were. I said, "2 Chainz of course". He was right across the hall at Def Jam so it wasn't hard to reach out to him. I finished my part first and sent it 2 Chainz. He did his and sent it to us. I got a chance to meet him at the video shoot, and he made it really comfortable for me. He's a really cool cat. It's such a great song!
The video must've been a blast.
I want to bring the music to life. It's one thing to hear it, but it's another thing to bring a visual to it. I'm all about making dope videos with good dancing, singing, and the whole nine.
What artists shaped you?
I listened to a lot of older stuff. My other used to play Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Brown, and James Ingram. Some of the new cats today have inspired me like Usher, Chris Brown, and Miguel. It's dope because I got to perform alongside Miguel and Trey Songz on New Year's Eve. I brought the New Year in on stage.
Was there a lot of music growing up in Florida?
There was a lot, but it was mostly rap. My mom really encouraged me to pursue singing. She was in a band herself. Once I said I wanted to do music and take it seriously, she was behind me one-hundred percent. That's how it went. I was always into music, but it was initially like a hidden passion of mine. Singing wasn't really the coolest thing to do. I was more into sports. Once I got into high school, I decided to give singing a chance, and I've never looked back since.
What influences you outside of R&B and hip hop?
I like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Two Door Cinema Club, and The Fray. A lot of cartoons give me visual inspiration. I got the inspiration for the ending of the "Leggo" video from watching certain superhero movies like The Avengers and Batman. I try to bring out inspiration from whatever is around me. Art is everywhere.
What's your favorite cartoon?
It's probably Tom and Jerry. I like the Marvel Comics cartoons too like X-Men or Spiderman. I'd love to do an animated video some day! That's definitely one of my goals.
What's next for you?
I'm working on my album. We're wrapping up a direction for it. I'm going to drop a couple more singles, and hopefully the full album will be out by summertime. I'm going for young good vibes. It's feel good people can relate to. I'm from Ft. Lauderdale. People from there are as real as it gets. If they don't like you, they'll tell you. I want to take that aspect and put it in my music and keep it real!
