"Beasts of the Southern Wild" Nominated for Four Independent Spirit Awards - Find out about this soundtrack on a vinyl-only label

The Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack, which was just nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards and is a promising frontrunner for the Oscars and the Globes. The vinyl was released the same day as the DVD, and is the first release from a new vinyl-only, music-for-film label called Thirty3 and a 3rd, which is run by three music industry ladies who have assembled some of film's most important soundtracks, and worked on some of the music world's most important albums of the last 10 years.

The soundtrack and original score to the Fox Searchlight Pictures' feature film Beasts of the Southern Wild - one of the year's most talked about films - is available on vinyl. Composed by Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin, the score has received widespread critical praise.

The vinyl release coincides with the film's release on DVD and Blu-ray on the same day via Fox Searchlight Pictures. The album will be the first endeavor of new label Thirty3 and a 3rd, who specialize in releasing music from film. All albums will be distributed henceforth through Alternative Distribution Alliance, the independent music distribution arm of Warner Music Group.

Beasts of the Southern Wild has been a sensation on the 2012 independent film scene, winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera d'Or at Cannes, and finding box office success around the world. Critics and audiences have widely praised the film's original storytelling, stunning score and cinematography, and potent visceral punch.

The score shapes the emotional arc of the film, in which six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) exists on the brink of orphanhood, in a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural order is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father, Wink (Dwight Henry), and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.

The Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack arose from a collaboration between the film's director, Benh Zeitlin, and co-composer/engineer Dan Romer. According to Zeitlin, the two crafted it as "an anthem to express the ferocious, resilient, triumphant mentality necessary to hold out at the end of the world." It was also important to them that the score reflect the point of view of its imaginative young heroine. Zeitlin says he and Romer intended to "put you in Hushpuppy's head and experience the adventure through her eyes."

The soundtrack is comprised of orchestral melodies woven together with vibrant strings, classic Jazz Age piano, and twinkling celeste. The composers also collaborated with members of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, a Grammy®-nominated group from Pilette, Louisiana, to feature on the soundtrack. The Ramblers combine the heritage music of their native Southern Louisiana with contemporary twists of rockabilly, punk and swing.

Thirty3 and a 3rd is the new label spearheaded by music industry veterans Holly Adams, Mary Ramos, and Julie Yannatta. Separately, these three women have created some of film's most amazing soundtracks and helped release some of the music world's most notable albums. They are now collaborating to release music they love from film, emphasizing vinyl and special packaging.

"We knew we wanted to do some sort of collaborative work together," says Adams of her longtime friendships with Ramos and Yannatta. "When the opportunity to work with Beasts of the Southern Wild was presented to us, we all knew it was the perfect album to stand as a calling card for our newfound label. We're so excited and thrilled to play a part in getting the music for such a remarkable film out to people on vinyl."
