Ben Stiller is stepping behind the
camera once again to direct Help Me Spread Goodness, a drama which will have some comedic
overtones, for Participant Media. Stiller will also produce.
The project centers on a Chicago banker who is swindled through a popular Nigerian internet scam. Participant has pledged to make movies that inspire social change, and while this film is intended to have its fair share of laughs, it will bring to light current issues that plague Nigeria and other African nations. The film will shoot when Stiller is finished with The Trial of the Chicago 7, which he committed to direct after Steven Spielberg exited as director.
In other Stiller news, Reese Witherspoon is attached to star with him in Fox's conceptual sci-fi comedy Used Guys. The film has stalled in development circles for many years and at one point had a June 15, 2007 release date, but Fox shelved it while it was in pre-production because of its budget. Little Miss Sunshine co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are negotiating to assume directorial duties for the film. There is no writer attached to the script yet.
The film is set in a future run by women who clone men and trade them like used vehicles. Stiller would play an outdated model who goes in search of his masculinity. This re-booted version will focus on the relationship between Stiller and Witherspoon.
