Ben Taylor "Listening" Album Review — 4.5 out of 5 stars

Listening is a rather apropos title for Ben Taylor's latest offering.
It's the kind of record that beckons multiple and close listens because the singer and songwriter has gone so deep. It's a rewarding record on numerous levels. From the soulful, '70s-inspired swoon of "Oh Brother" to the rustic harmonies and whistling of "Giula", Taylor superbly delivers a myriad of feelings via a multitude of styles.
"Burning Bridges" rises from the ashes with some poignant musings such as "Wisdom cured so many things" before his voice soars over an intricate guitar melody and organ swell. The gentle finger-picked title track proves emblematic of everything wonderful about Taylor. He can pen a poetic song that's both infectious and invigorating. That's a lost art.
Album closer "Next Time Around" remains a standout, elegantly wrapping up this trip with a heartfelt final word, resounding piano, and an acoustic hum. You're going to want to listen very close because not only has Taylor made his best album yet, he's made one of the year's best.
