Adele, can now be regarded as much as cultural phenomenon as she is a soulful songstress. The humble girl from South London speaks in a universal language that has catapulted her into the stratosphere of history's big pop hitters. Her previously released, numerically titled albums 19 and 21, have sold in the multiple of millions, and her stirring new track for 2015 - the emotionally charged "Hello" - once again broke records as being the fastest-selling single in 3 years. Not restricted by being the best-selling physical and digital track, the song also streamed an astounding 7.32 million times in its first week of release. It reached number one in the singles charts of no less than 28 countries.
From her latest album, 25 (XL Recordings), "Hello" is a song that deals with the now-traditional fare from Adele. A recently 'broken-up' woman calls a younger version of herself on the telephone. There's reflection, longing, strength, defiance. All the classic heart-break (and 'hey, let's rebuild') ingredients are represented.
The accompanying video, directed by Xavier Dolan, is also a record-breaker and was viewed over 27 million times in the first 25 hours of release on Vevo, and within 5 days it had been watched over 100 million times.
Drawing criticism from the likes of Noel Gallagher as representing a "Sea of cheese" in modern music, the resounding reception of Adele's 2015 album and lead single has been fevered and celebratory. There is proof, perhaps that nothing sells like heartbreak, and a good old-fashioned black and white video adds a touch of class to the timeless themes that, at times, it appears pop music was invented to express.
