British producer Mark Ronson landed the mothership in his partnership with the omnipresent Bruno Mars for his fourth studio album, Uptown Special, released on January 13th, 2015 - a record dedicated to the late and great Amy Winehouse.
The undeniable album of pop-friendly light-funk tunes was received warmly by the majority of critics, despite the tonal departure from the sounds that made Ronson famous. Commercially the album landed a top 5 spot on release week and the fan base of Ronson grew for this more radio-friendly endeavor.
Undeniably, the best known, best circulated, best-everything track from the album was "Uptown Funk". The lightest, breeziest, most stirring tune from the album received 2 GRAMMY nominations, those for "Best Pop/Rock Duo or Group Performance" and "Best Song". In the week of January 25th - a little over seven days after the album's release, the single was streamed a record breaking 2.34 million times. It was Ronson's first appearance in the US singles chart, was number one for seven non-consecutive weeks in the UK.
With a video showing Bruno Mars doing his thang on the streets of a number of cities around the world, as well as the 20th Century Fox backlot in Los Angeles. The singer's trademark spangly chains and hair spray (and humorous rollers) have secured the video almost 1.23 Billion hits on YouTube, making it the fifth most viewed video on the streaming service to date.
