Lana Del Rey Videos
Just shy of 38 million views, Lana Del Rey's video for the single "High By the Beach," from Honeymoon, is a meta-portrait of fame, fans, and paparazzi. In a world where the line between real and virtual life is ever more difficult to separate, 30-year-old Lana Del Rey seems happy to blur the line further.
The clip appears to be shot at her new Malibu home, a nod to the singer's recent relocation from elsewhere in Los Angeles, brought on after too many curious fans found their way onto her property. The home is empty, save for a a few sparse furnishings like the bed that she listlessly lounges on, billowing curtains she uses as dramatic props, and a carefully-placed vintage coffee carafe. A helicopter stalks her.
After wandering through the house, she runs down to the beach, brings back a guitar case, and heads out of one of the house's three terraces. She pulls out a bazooka and blows the chopper out of the sky. The emotionally detached lyrics, "All I wanna do is get high by the beach" course through it all like a morphine drip.
At face value, the video is simply about the singer's contempt for the paparazzi, and by extension, the obsession of her fans. But on second glance there's something else going on, something that looks much more like a codependent relationship.
Any pop star who likes living in million dollar mansions needs fans, and those fans need access to their favorite artists, which gives a certain license to the media. What this video in fact accomplishes is a dramatic portrayal of that strangely intimate connection. Depending on how you see it, it's a dynamic that can be engaged, manipulated, and preyed upon by anyone involved in it, but in the end, it's always good for publicity.
