Run the Jewels Videos
Depicting a violent interaction between a white police officer and a black pedestrian, "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F***)" discusses the racial tensions that currently prevail across the United States. It's a timely piece taking direct aim at the senselessness of the tension. Viewers are never presented with why the officer and citizen are fighting, only that they are, suggesting that this existing conflict, and the others taking place around the U.S. in real life, have no reason to be happening, but nonetheless are. "Conditions create a villain, the villain is given vision, The vision becomes a vow to seek vengeance on all the vicious."
Run the Jewels have never shied away from discussing the strain between different socio-economic communities and their assumed appearance by outsiders. In the AG Rojas-directed video, all the audience knows is that these two characters from opposite sides of the "law" have been fighting for a long time, both tired and beat up from the beginning. It is all shot in black and white, but clearly the discussion isn't, or is it?
The video addresses head-on the continued, senseless conflicts due to racial tensions and supposed societal roles. In the end, both characters are tired, bruised, and bloodied, sitting on the opposite sides of a pure white bed. We don't know what will happen next, but it seems as if both sides are just getting tired of this sh**.
