Vince Staples Videos
Beginning with shots of Vince Staples rapping from the backseat of a squad car, the video for "Norf Norf" [from the well-received Summertime '06] depicts the violence two young, black men endure at the hands of the police. Starting just after the arrest, the video goes through the drive to the police station, booking, interrogation, and Vince's eventual lockup. It's a harsh look at the experience that young black men from "Northside Long Beach" go through when arrested. There is not a moment of the video where anyone thinks Staples might be innocent of the unseen crime he's been tossed in jail for.
The chorus repeats, "I've never run from nothin' but the police," and from the scene viewed through the video, there is good reason for doing so. Staples seems intent on the idea that nothing is going to change, "know when change gon' come like Obama would say, But they shootin' everyday 'round my mama and them way." He is constantly faced with the difficult realities of his neighborhood, and knows that there are daily problems that need addressing, "Folks need Porsches, hoes need abortions, I just need y'all out of my business."
Staples is ever aware of how things work where he comes from. He accepts each brutal step as if he's been through it one hundred times before. In fact, this is the reality of Staples' world and there isn't going to be a change anytime soon. The video is direct, honest, and almost tactile, outlining an all-too-often-avoided subject of our society.
