The nominees for the 2017 Grammy Awards have been released, and a list of familiar artists are leading the field. Beyoncé scored nine nominations, while Kanye West, Rihanna, and Drake each received eight. The award show is set to air February 12th live from Los Angeles, California's Staples Center.

The Album of the Year race finds Beyonce's Lemonade going up against Adele's 25, Justin Bieber's Purpose, Drake's Views, and the somewhat surprisingly included Sturgill Simpson album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth. To note, both Purpose and 25 were released in 2015, but they were released after the cut-off date.

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, told Rolling Stone his thoughts on this year's choice of nominees: "Artists seem to be exercising their creativity and creative freedom with less expectation on creating music that fits in a box with a nice little bow on it. People are perhaps feeling a little more freedom and liberation to follow their muse wherever that might take you."
