At this point in human history it would seem that the only surprising thing left for actor, comedian, writer, singer, aging-enfant-terrible and bon-viveur, Bill Murray to do would be to produce something unsurprising. It's just been announced that Mr. Murray is recording a classical album. Makes sense that at the age of 66 that Murray would try something new.
The project is called "New Worlds" and features the artist performing literary readings over chamber music from a trio led by cellist Jan Vogler. Works from Gershwin, West Side Story and Stephen Foster are listed as being part of the song selections, while readings feature words from Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and Walt Whitman.
Mira Wang on violin and Vanessa Perez on piano make up the instrumental trio with Vogler. Classical segments come from Schubert, Piazzolla, and Bach.
There's a live show too; premiering at Festival Napa Valley on the July 20th, it's said to "explore themes of American history and identity." Following the festival a tour of the album is slated to unfold through North America before the collection is released in August.
In a world where we could all use a few more pleasant surprises, this latest Billy Murray news is very welcome — and with a tour in the cards, it seems like the hipster sport of ‘Murray Sporting' can declare an open season.
