Sometimes sorrow can sound so sweet.
On Any Man In America, Blue October turn heartbreak into hypnotic rock. With thirteen connected tracks, Any Man In America follows a journey from heartache to rebirth. Singer Justin Furstenfeld speaks directly from his soul with every word. Real voicemail messages launch "The Feel Again (Stay)" an elegantly entrancing opener, colored with flourishes of piano and synths. Furstenfeld's lyrics resound in unison with the slow keys as the drums kick in. Passing the six-minute mark, the song spirals into the album's vivid story, masterfully beginning the ride. "For the Love" and "The Honesty" ebb and flow seamlessly from guitars to electronic textures, hypnotizing anyone in earshot.
"The Chills" rises into an energetic flurry that screams with a gloriously dark refrain. It could've been written by The Cure, but it's got a visceral power that could only come from Blue. With an acoustic beginning and orchestral swells, "The Follow Through" proves to be a fitting closer, showcasing every facet of Blue's brilliance. Musically, Blue October expand immensely through incorporating entrancing, elegant synth sounds into their deep alternative sound, and that's where much of the record's wonder is born.
A poignant, poetic, and powerful masterpiece, Any Man In America will tug on your heartstrings and touch your very soul. There's nothing sweeter than that…
