Perhaps as well known for his activism as for his singing, U2 frontman Bono was recently awarded the prestigious Liberty Medal for his humanitarian efforts. The annual award, given by the National Constitution Center, honors leadership in the pursuit of global freedom. The organization DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), which Bono co-founded in 2002 to combat hunger and disease issues worldwide, will receive a $100,000 donation in conjunction with the award.
In its 18 year history the award has never before been given to someone who is not a politician. Emphasizing the potential of every individual, Constitution Center President Joseph Torsella said that Bono proves that "the office of citizen is the most important in the world." Past award winners include Colin Powell, Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela.
