Hollywood has always been a place where glitz and grime collide, and a no one knows that better than Los Angeles native and hip hop up-and-comer Kail. Hailing from one of the grittier streets in tinsel town, the young MC has become well acquainted with all the characters that populate the Boulevard, from the social savvy talent agent to the young girl whose been forced to turn tricks all her life.
To scrutinize and pay homage to this background, Kail has compiled some of these stories on his debut release, The Hollywood Squares, a concept album where he takes on the persona of multiple people trying to survive in the opposing realities of Hollywood life (check out the single "Wendy" here). We were lucky enough to catch up with Kail to learn more about life as a burgeoning hip hop artist and get a few snap shots of his past in the town that has influenced him so much.
What have you been listening to lately?
I've been listening to a lot of Newport groove shit... a lot of Teddy P, Zapp, The Stylistics. It makes it that much harder to stop smoking cigarettes.
Where's your favorite place to chill?
Lately, it's been Nocan's house. We always get into some real nigga shit, and Stasia is a great bartender.
What's the most dramatic thing you ever did to save money as a starving musician?
I used to steal a lot of shit. I never went hungry. I never went sober.
Tell us one of your favorite song lyric.
"With the rhythm it takes to dance to what we have to live through, you could dance under water and not get wet, oh!!" George Clinton is a muthafuckin' genius.
What is your most cherished musical instrument or accessory?
I'm really into my mixing headphones. I can hear the stick hitting the snare with these shits. It really envelops the imagination.
If you could change one thing about the music industry today what would it be?
For so-called "real artists" to take over the spots they think they deserve. If bullshit has taken over, it's our fault.
What never goes out of style?
Light skinned niggas. I have a shirt that says we're back, but I learned that the world never stopped loving us. At least, that's what Mindy Miller (Elvis's last girlfriend) told me in Las Vegas.
What's the theme song to your life?
"Bitch Better Have my Money"
What movies, artists, authors or athletes inspire you the most?
My parents and the movie Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens.
What's your favorite way to stay in shape?
What non-musician would you most like to meet?
OJ Simpson. That muthafucka is a God damn disciple. He may just end up being the coldest nigga of all times. I just want to be sprinkled with some of that type of game. The Juice will forever be loose!!
What's your biggest guilty pleasure?
Pain killers, Hennessey and double cheeseburgers from McDonald's...in the same sitting.
Are you on MySpace?
As we speak.
