Break It Down: Matt & Kim

Mix one guy and one girl (romantic interest optional, but always preferred), add one full drum set, sprinkle layers of keyboard, organ and synth on top, record and serve on the freshest music blog. It's a recipe for indie success we've all heard before, but Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim add two extra ingredients that set them apart from the rest of the batch: infectious melodies and addictively danceable rhythms. One listen to the hip hop tinged breakbeat on the lead single "Daylight" off their latest album, Grand, and it's clear that while the setup may seem cookie-cutter, the sonic confections that result are anything but.
We recently caught up with percussionist/vocalist Kim Schifino via email to get the scoop on their musical tastes, snare drums named Lil' Jon and false promises of bikini bodies.
What have you been listening to lately?
Anything on hot 97. TI, 50 Cent, Jay-Z…
Where’s your favorite place to chill?
In our apartment. We are always on the road so to come home and be able to just sit on the couch is so nice.
What’s the most dramatic thing you ever did to save money as a starving musician?
I almost spent my RI quarter collection. Luckily Matt stopped me. I now have over 600 RI quarters. Soon I will have them all.
Tell us one of your favorite song lyrics.
"If I can’t do it homie, it can’t be done."
What is your most cherished musical instrument or accessory?
Matt will say his baritone ukulele, but too bad he forgot it in some random town. How can he say it is his most cherished instrument and leave it somewhere? Mine is my new snare drum that John from Main Drag made. I call it Lil' Jon.
What never goes out of style?
What's the theme song to your life?
50 Cent's "If I Can't.”
What movies, artists, authors or athletes inspire you the most?
Bo Jackson… Bo knows.
What's your favorite way to stay in shape?
It use to be dancing, but that doesn’t happen as much as I would like. I have been buying these workout videos online and try to do them while we are home. It usually just ends up with me yelling at this lady on my computer who is telling me I am going to have a bikini body in no time. It is a love hate relationship.
What non-musician would you most like to meet?
Matt would say Larry David. I think I would go with Charlie Day.
What's your biggest guilty pleasure?
I really don’t think I have any guilty pleasures. I have a shit ton of pleasures, but I am not guilty about them.
MySpace or Facebook?
I still can’t figure out Facebook. Over Christmas, my sister was teaching me how to use it, but it still confuses me… so I guess MySpace.
