A remake of the 1988 film Bright Lights, Big City, which starred Michael J. Fox and Kiefer Sutherland, is in the works. MGM, which has been commissioning many remakes lately, will distribute the film, which may or may not be a modernized update on the Jay McInereny novel about a Midwesterner who moves to New York, takes a gig at a magazine, and is quickly sucked into the alluring world of drugs, drinking, and nightlife.
Josh Schwartz will make his directorial debut with the feature. He is the creator of Gossip Girl. McInerney is a contributing writer to Gossip Girl, which helped spur the remake.
Schwartz is also working on the script for X-Men: First Class. When he is finished with that project, he will begin work on the remake's script.
