Imagine you’re a 14-year-old high school student in the suburbs of New Orleans, living in a house with 21 relatives after seeing your home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. You get the news that a City Councilman wants to meet with you and talk about the aftermath -- yippee. You show up in the morning and ohmigod is that Britney Spears???
The pop princess and Louisiana native made a surprise appearance at a breakfast and whisked off some lucky students of St. Catherine of Siena School for a little shopping spree and, later, a hearty meal of classic New Orleans fare at one of Emeril’s restaurants. Spears also paid a visit to the school’s dance team, the Gatorettes, and said it was an honor to appear alongside them. Later, she got a taste of Mardi Gras, and was photographed waving to the throngs from a balcony and showering beads down on the people below.
For the pop star and her publicity machine, it’s a much-needed dose of sunshine and goodwill. Spears has been back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately -- endangering her baby boy while fleeing paparazzi, infuriating the Christian Right with rumors of a blasphemous Will & Grace appearance, and dodging continued rumors that her marriage is falling apart and that she is pregnant with a second child (Britney’s camp has seemed more firm in its denial of the latter).
