Britney Spears is finding herself at the center of another storm of publicity, but not the welcome kind. The pop princess and young mother was photographed driving outside Malibu with her baby boy, Sean, being held in her lap instead of secured safely in a car seat. After the photographs were circulated, they sparked some outcry about parental negligence -- and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that they had paid a visit to Spears' residence at the request of the Department of Children and Family Services.
Spears, however, quickly and adamantly maintained that she was only trying to protect her son from overly aggressive paparazzi, who had apparently descended on the singer while she waited for a bodyguard in a Starbucks parking lot.
"I had a horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi while I was with my baby," Spears said in a statement. "Because of a recent incident when I was trapped in my car without my baby by a throng of paparazzi, I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger."
California law requires child automobile passengers to be secured in safety or booster seats until they are six years old or weigh at least 60 pounds. But, if Spears' side of the story proves true, she might have a case against the photographers -- at the beginning of 2006, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law that increases fines for paparazzi who inflict harm on their targets.
After keeping a low profile -- by her standards, anyway -- since becoming a mother in September of last year, the pop star has recently been making regular headlines again. A scheduled guest appearance by Spears on Will & Grace drew fire from Christian conservatives, who reportedly have succeeded in strong-arming NBC into changing a bit that cast Spears as the host of a Christian cooking show called "Cruci-fixins."
